First ever World Series of Poker cash!
I'm happy to say that my first tournament at the WSOP I was able to place in the money. There was a total of 2564 players who entered the tournament and I placed in 172nd place. Although I was disappointed I didn't win the tournament, it was still felt pretty nice to get my first ever WSOP cash under my belt. It paid around $3700 which isn't too much money but hopefully I'll be parlay that into something big in another tournament. At my opening table I had 1983 World Series of Poker champion Tom Mcevoy sitting to my right. I wasn't too worried because from what I know he's a pretty tight player and plays pretty straight forward. Other then him I had a pretty weak opening table but I really couldln't get much going. The cards were pretty dead and the pots I did enter I wasn't able to accumulate very many chips. We started with 3000 in chips and one point I was even as low as 1800, then I made a pretty good call with A,10 when a short stacked moved all in with K,Q and I was able to double up. The very next hand I pick up pocket Aces and got it all in again vs my oppenents pockets Queens. I was then moved to another table where I had Full tilt Pro Clonie Gowen sitting to my left. At this table I was able to pick up some chips when I flopped top two pair with 9,6 of diamonds vs my opponent's Q,Q on a 9,6,4 flop. I then went on to lose a couple pots when I was raising from position and had short stacks move in on me and I had to call do to the pot odds. They were paying out the top 270 players and this is where I pretty much lost all my chips. I wasn't able to play very aggressive around the bubble time like I usually do because of my chip stack and I really got blinded down right after we got into the money. When I was extremely short I pushed all-in for barely nothing only looking at a King in my hand, I was pretty happy when someone called me showing Q,J knowing it didn't matter what my other card was because I was winning either way. Well the other card ended up being a deuce and the flop came Q,J,4 knocking me out of the tournament. Like I mentioned earlier, as upset I was not winning the tournament and winning over 600k, it still felt pretty nice to get my first ever WSOP cash and points toward the Player of the Year standings.
The next day I decided to play the $2000 Pot Limit Holdem tournament. I knew this tournament would have less people b/c Pot Limit is a lot less popular then No Limit Holdem. We had about 600 players in this tournament and my opening table was very tough. There wasn't many reconizable pros at my table until T.J Cloutier came and sat to my right. We got into one hand together in a raised heads up pot, but we pretty much checked it down to the river where he won with Ace high beating my kicker. I really couldn't catch much tread in ths tournament just pretty much staying around average chip stack throughout the first 6-7 hours. Then I got into a huge pot where if I win this pot, I move into the chip leader of the tournament just ahead of then chip leader Joe Hachem. An aggressive player raises from second position and I elect to call with A,Q offsuit from the cut off. The big blind who was really short decides to call also. The flop comes A,Q,J with two clubs and the small blind moves all in right away.. the orginal raiser doesn't think long and calls the all-in. At this point I assess the situation for about a minute and move all-in for about double the original bet. The raiser calls and shows A,Q as well and the big blind had K,5 of clubs giving him a straight and flush draw. Right away on the turn the 10 of clubs comes off, the big blind starts cheering until someone says, 'hey hold on, Jay has the Ace of clubs'. And bam on the river, the 9 of clubs comes off. Everyone is freaking out until they notice that 9 of clubs that gives me the nut flush gives the big blind a STRAIGHT FLUSH. So that pot there crippled me quite a bit and I wasn't able to recover afterwards. I stuck around for a couple more hours when I moved in with 6,6 and was called with J,J and got knocked out around 100th place out of 600. I wasn't really too dissapointed because I know if I win that 3-way all in pot I had real chance to really win the tournament.
I'm not going to play this saturday's $1500 tournament and decided I'm going to probably play on Sunday and Money. The Sunday and Monday tournaments aren't no limit holdem so I figure they'll have a smaller field which I would prefer to play in.
I'll be back on here tomorrow to let you know how it goes!
