A little of this a little of that..

What's up guys,

Haven't posted in a while because I haven't played that much poker last week, been pretty busy.  I was able to get a couple sessions in, I'll post the some interesting hands later on.  But for some reason Full Tilt has been having some disconnection problems and I almost lost a huge pot with a set of Jacks but I got disconnected.  So I quit that session not wanting to lose get screwed in pot.  Let me think of what else I've been up to.  Well I went out for dinner with a cousin of mine and a friend of his because they are playing a charity poker tournament and wanted to some poker advice.  We went to a real nice restaurant called Octagon, very good steak.  Basically just went over basic tournament strategy for beginners.  When it comes to very basic poker strategy I think Phil Hellmuth's beginner strategy from his book 'Play Poker like the Pros' is the best.  Although I think that poker book is complete garbage and its probably one of the worst poker books I've read to date, I still think his beginner section about sticking to the top 10-15 best starting hands and playing a push or fold strategy is the way to go.  So we had a nice dinner, went over how to play the tournament and what hands to stick to and had a nice night.  The tournament is on Tuesday and I think i will be playing it with them, its a $500 buy-in tournament and forget what charity its for, but should be a fun night and I'll post on how I do.

Ummm what else have I been up to.. well yesterday I went to a friend's house with some of the guy's to watch the football games.  Wasn't overly impressed with any of the games, felt the New England game was pretty boring and I wanted to see Green Bay in the Super Bowl, but oh well.  While watching football we decided to have another annual 'Beatrice Invitational Poker Tournament'.  For those who read my blog a while back I mentioned how this is a tournament we have with pretty much the same guy's about once a year for very little money but more pride at stake.  I am the two-time defending the champion so I was looking to make it a three-peat.  Not too much happened to the whole tournament and I was able to get head-ups with my little brother Adam after sucking out with Ace King vs Two's pocket Kings.  Out of everyone in the tournament Adam was the most inexperienced yet the one person I wanted to get head-up against the least.  He plays with this relentless aggression that no one else in the tournament had.  He's raising and betting every pot putting non-stop pressure.  During the tournament everyone sat there tight and he kept picking up pot after pot.  So like I said he was the one guy heads-up I knew I couldn't just run over.  And when we were heads-up he played correctly, and I don't even know where he learned it but he played it smart.  He was basically all-in or fold against me.  Generally if you're playing an opponent you feel is better then you, playing this way is ideal.  You don't want to play small pots against a better player or even any hands post-flop because they will out play you.  By going all-in or fold like he did, doesn't give me a chance to outplay him and forces me to gamble.  And that exactly happened, we ended up getting it all in with my A,Q vs his 2,2 and his pair held up and he won the tournament.

Here's me and the new Beatrice Poker Invitational Champion.

This week I'm looking to get back on track online and get a lot hands in.  I've been doing quite well at the .50/.1NL stakes and I'm almost at the point where I can jump up to 1/2NL.  If all goes well I'll be at 1/2NL by the end of January unless I hit rough patch.

Oh yeah, here's some hands from last week:

SICK: www.pokerhand.org/?1972684 -  Now this hand is complete sickness.  I'm happy the way I played it.  I guess its pretty easy to get is all in with KK, but the whole session I was setting this guy up for a hand like this one.  I was pounding on him all session and knew he was getting sick of it.  So when I picked up KK and he 3 bet me, I 4 bet immediately expecting him to go all-in light.  Although my Kings got grabbed by 8,6, you can't be results oriented in this game and just know when you make the right move.

MORE SICKNESS: www.pokerhand.org/?1972704:  Just gross, nothing worse losing a hand like this early in a session and having to grind yourself out of a hole.

LOSS:  www.pokerhand.org/?1972709 - Against the same guy who grabbed me with 8,6.

WIN: www.pokerhand.org/?1972714 -  This is why you don't call a 3 bet with K,J.

WIN: www.pokerhand.org/?1972722 -  Don't bluff me!

Gonna get back to the grind tonight.  Talk to you guys later.

Well he was a pretty weak player from what I seen sitting at the table... he checked to me twice, when board paired on the turn I had a feeling that he would think his Ace high was good.. So I went with it.. and if he would of checked to me on the river I was planning on betting for value knowing I'd get called with Ace high.
