MMA
So this summer me and my buddy eskal decided we'd look into training mixed martial arts. I've always been a big fan of the UFC and MMA in general and always thought it would be cool to take some classes. We found a pretty sick school called Toronto BJJ which offers a 2 free days so today I went for my first time to give it a shot. I by no means want to train to compete, that would be suicide, I just want to get in good shape and learn Ju-Jitsu and Muay Thai and possibly some boxing. The first class was pretty awesome, although we really didn't do too much actual sparring because it was our first class. It was pretty crazy to see how good of shape you have to be in to actually do this. After the warm-up I was hurting. I also got a new appreciation of how harmless some people look, but how potentially dangerous they can be. If you were to look at some of the guys in this class, they were pretty small, some middle-aged dorky looking, guys that if you saw in the bar you probably wouldn't think twice about fighting them.. Meanwhile if you did they would break you in half in like 30 seconds. During our submission wrestling class we finally got to spar and I was partnered with a guy who was about 135 lbs max, real scrawny looking, basically looked like a little punk. This guy basically beat the shit out of me for a full 5 minute round..well he didn't really hurt me, he was actually a real nice guy showing and teaching me things.. but it was absolutely insane how he was able to control me on the ground and put me in submissions or choke holds without even trying. It was extremely impressive. I later found out he's a teacher of Ju-jitsu and actually has a fight coming up in a couple months. But it just goes with what I was saying that if I saw this guy in the street, there would be no doubt in my mind that I would be able to crush him. It just really opens your eyes to how tough some guys think they are, but really aren't... I know numerous guys who can fight when they are at a bar or on the street, but god forbid one day they start a fight with an MMA specialist without knowing.. things could really turn ugly.
Here's a sick video I found actually reading another blog and it completely reminds me of what I'm talking about. The guy in the video Urijah Faber who's the current champion in World Extreme Cage fighting. This video was when he was younger and a crazy story (the good stuff starts about the 1:50 mark). Check it out:
Aside from that, poker has been pretty decent the last couple days. Was able to recover all the losses from my shitty day in my last blog and just grinding it out. Jay
