Upswing
The cards have been treating me real well so far this month. To tell you the truth, almost a little too well, I haven't had a losing day yet in the month of June. Which gets a little scary, because poker is a game of swings and when you win a bunch of days in a row you know it's inevitable to hit some rough patches in the near future. The other night I was kind of bored grinding cash games so I played a small stakes Pot Limit Omaha tournament (aka donkament in the online world). I ran extremely hot right from the get go and tripled up my first hand, I actually was chip leader the entire tournament right till the final table. With about 5 players left I got into a huge pot in a standard omaha flip and got the worse end of it and got knocked out. Oh well.
On June 15th there's a $500 buy-in World Series of Poker satellite on Full Tilt that I won a seat into today so I'm going to be playing that. They are giving away a shit load of seats to the main event in Vegas in that tourney so hopefully I can win one and be able to head down to Vegas to play it.
I really haven't put much poker content in my last few blogs so I'm going to post some hands and go through my thought process. I apologize in advance for the messy crammed writing, I have no idea why its happening, whenever I post hands from this website it seems to mess everything up. Anyway, here are some hands:
^ This is a pretty standard hand, but it just goes to show how having a loose aggro image can get you paid off in big pots. Earlier on at that table I lost a small pot and showed down some junk hand like 9,5 off suit. Right after that people gave me zero respect for having a hand so when I do pick up a hand like Aces I'm able to extract a lot of value.
^ This hand is kind of interesting. I made a standard preflop call with 4,4 in a multi-way pot looking to set mine (flop a set). When the flop comes all overs I basically planned on folding to any bet and giving up the hand. But then jackpot, I spike my set on the turn. I bet to protect my hand and for value and get called by a player I was battling with all day. The river seems harmless so I make another value bet, but then get check/raised for a big amount. I was really stumped at this point. I couldn't put him on a hand whatsoever. I finally decided to call which I think was a bit thin, I think I could of found a fold on the river, the only hand I was beating was a complete bluff. He wouldn't be check-raising me on the river with two pair or even top pair. It was either a straight, set or complete air. So I was a little disappointed with that hand, but it wasn't horrible.
^ The guy in the cut off opens and I just flat call from the puck. I'll mix it up between 3 betting and just flat calling here, but more often than not I'll just flat with mid to small pair in this spot. I get a dream flop and the short stacker over shoves into both of us.. Now the original raiser thought for a second and just called. At this point I thought his range was AK,KQ,KJ,KK,QQ,AA. Although I think he isolates the all-in player with AA. So I decide to just call to extract more value on further streets knowing there isn't too many scare cards in the deck he can hit to make me think I'm behind. On the turn I fill up and make a small half pot bet, leaving me enough to make a small shove on the river. Everything goes as planned and I'm able to rake in a decent size pot.
^ Now this hand is a bit spewy but I don't hate my play. I made a standard small blind open into the big blind with 10,J suited. The player in the big blind is a solid player from what I've seen prior to this hand. Its an Ace high flop with two spades and I make a standard continuation bet. This player thinks for a bit and raises. At this point I really felt he was weak. A lot of good players like to attack continuation bets on Ace high flops, if I were in his spot I think I would be raising with a wide range also. I think for a bit and decide to 4 bet semi-bluff him here hoping he will fold his hand or even fold a mediocre draw. And if he happens to have an Ace I'm not drawing dead, still having flush draw outs. He ends up shoving and I'm priced into call now and he shows me bottom two which really sucked and was a bad read by me. The turn actually opens up my hand big time giving me two pair outs to go along with my flush draw, but I brick out on the river. Tonight I'm not going to play any cards and probably just chill and watch the basketball game. Later -Jay
