August Goals

Alright after my last blog I sat back and thought of goals I wanted to set for myself during the month of August.  I usually don't do things like this but I want to mix things up to try and shake off this downswing.  I'm going to make sure all my goals are attainable and realistic.  August is a pretty busy month so I'll have to focus on my scheduling to make sure I can get in all the hands I need to play.  Alright, enough with the bullshit.. here are the goals..

1) Play a minimum of 50,000 hands this month.  This will probably be the toughest of all because I usually don't play on weekends or weeknights at all.  I generally play during the day while Julie is at work.  But to reach 50k hands I'll definitely need to incorporate night and weekend sessions.

2) Spend at least 3 hours of week studying the game.  Instead of just waking up and jumping into a session, I want to spend more time watching training videos, reading forums and analyzing hands.  After every session I'm going to open my poker tracker and look over my losing hands and see if I made any mistakes.  This will be tough for me because usually when I have a losing session I just want to walk away from my computer and sometimes won't even look to see how much I lost.  So this will force me to look at any mistakes I've made and correct them.  Also to look at my winning hands to re-enforce good plays.

3) Stop-loss of 5 buy-ins.  This has always been pretty standard for me so I can't see myself breaking this rule.  It means that if at any point in my session I am down 5 buy-ins I have to stop no matter what.  Doing this helps to stop the bleeding when you're losing because no matter how good you are its tough to play 100% when you lose a lot of big pots.

4) Always do something active or shower before a session.  Whenever I play a session after waking up and throwing on my robe,  I always seem to lose.  By having a work-out or swim before I play, wakes me up and helps me focus.

5)  Win at least 25 buy-ins this month. This is definitely just a minimum, I hope to win more but we'll see if the cards cooperate.  I'm not one to really talk about specific numbers of wins or losses in my blog.  Although poker is a public game I still feel there is some privacy of how much a player makes down to the very cent.  So I'll be tracking my results using buy-ins (which is realistically the same thing I guess).  A buy-in means the max buy-in at a specific limit.  For example at 1/2NL the max buy-in is $200, so if you lose 4 buy-ins you've lost $800.  Same goes with every limit, 100 big blinds is the max buy-in.  And I never play in any game without having the max buy-in at all times.  If I'm playing 1/2nl and I lose a pot which brings my stack down to $183 I immediately top up for the next hand.  You will never see me on any of my tables without the max.

I could probably think of more goals and rule but I'm going to stick with these for the month of August.  I'm always going to try my best to not bitch or cry about losing in my blogs, but I can't promise that.

I look forward to a fun and profitable month and will blog a little more to let you all know how the battle goes....
